Reuse: 12 refrigerators in support of social inclusion

Bringing GoRecycle’s environmental mission to life while providing real support to people in the process of social integration and helping them find housing: that’s exactly what our latest collaboration with Groupe Coderr makes possible!

GoRecycle is proud to announce its support for Groupe Coderr’s affordable housing project, Les Habitations Coderr, by donating 12 reused refrigerators.

The reuse of these 12 refrigerators–giving them a second life when they are entrusted to GoRecycle so they can be reused rather than recycled–is made possible thanks to the expertise of service provider PureSphera.

This company is responsible for inspecting, testing, and refurbishing the refrigerators, ensuring reliable, safe, and high-quality appliances for future residents.

What is the Les Habitations Coderr affordable housing project?

Les Habitations Coderr is a complex of 60 affordable housing units located in Alma, in the Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean region. Its opening is planned for January 2026.

The project is an initiative of Groupe Coderr, a social economy enterprise recognized for its social integration mission, supporting individuals who are far from the labour market and isolated.

Les Habitations Coderr will offer, among other things:

  • 12 transitional housing units with psychosocial support
  • 4 adaptable units for people with reduced mobility
  • A community kitchen in collaboration with La Marmite fumante

How does GoRecycle support this social mission of affordable housing?

To equip the new housing units, GoRecycle is donating 12 used refrigerators to Groupe Coderr’s project.

These appliances come from the GoRéemploi program, an initiative that prioritizes the repair, inspection, and reuse of cooling appliances collected by the GoRecycle network through its partners.

This contribution makes it possible to:

● Reduce the cost of furnishing the housing units

● Provide future residents with a reliable, high-quality appliance

● Support a concrete circular economy approach in Quebec that extends the lifespan of refrigerators and helps protect the environment

What is the social impact of this collaboration?

The refrigerators will directly benefit the new residents of Les Habitations Coderr. More broadly, Groupe Coderr’s initiative will help to:

What is the environmental impact of this collaboration?

Reuse is the most sustainable solution when a refrigerator is still functional.

Reuse helps to:

  • Preserve natural resources by avoiding the manufacture of a new appliance
  • Reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions
  • Minimize the waste released into the environment

Refrigerators contain refrigerants, gases which can potentially emit more than one tonne of greenhouse gases (GHG) if not properly treated.

« “Entrusting your refrigerator to a GoRecycle partner for recycling is equivalent (in terms of GHG emissions) to using your reusable coffee cup up to 13,870 times. ».

By opting for reuse rather than recycling, PureSphera and GoRecycle maximize their environmental impact while supporting a socially focused project.

How are reused refrigerators supplied in Quebec?

Several steps were followed to provide refurbished fridges for this social housing project:

  1. Collection of refrigerators through GoRecycle services
  2. Sorting appliances to identify those suitable for reuse
  3. Inspection and testing carried out by PureSphera
  4. Redirecting appliances toward reuse rather than recycling

Thanks to the GoRéemploi program, GoRecycle contributes to the reuse of cooling appliances in Quebec, now put to the service of a major social cause.

Groupe Coderr and GoRecycle: a sustainable collaboration

The relationship between GoRecycle and Groupe Coderr dates back to the launch of the recovery program in 2021.

Since then, the two organizations have worked together to reduce the environmental impact of cooling appliances.

This new initiative further strengthens a partnership based on:

  • Environmental responsibility
  • Support for the social economy
  • The creation of direct value for local communities

Conclusion

By providing 12 refurbished fridges to Les Habitations Coderr, GoRecycle demonstrates that environmental action and a positive social impact can go hand in hand.

This collaboration with social enterprise Groupe Coderr perfectly illustrates GoRecycle’s mission: mobilizing all stakeholders in Quebec to responsibly manage cooling appliances.
